The EV1 and EV+ are remarkably different. While my silver EV1 looks like
Starship Citroen, my Dad's tan EV + says "Honey, I Shrunk The Minivan".
Admittedly, the EV+ seats more people (4 people compared to 2) but the EV1
is snappier. They are cars for different audiences. The EV1 aerodynamics produce 25% less drag then on production cars thanks to a raindrop shape, enclosed belly pan, and wheel covers. Matched with 80,000 watts, the EV1 leaves most cars in the dust. My Dad's EV+ accelerates more modestly like most compact cars. To its credit, the EV+ boasts next-generation metal hydride batteries. The result is improved range for the Honda in spite of its less efficient profile. GM's lead acid batteries give me about 45 miles on a charge. Better batteries are rumored to be in the works. The EV1 feels like a car conceived from the ground-up as an EV. I prefer the gauges, cockpit layout, and the charging system. The EV1's simple charging paddle is easier then the EV+ which must be locked into place. Both cars create zero emissions, are easy to use and safe, almost totally quiet, and out perform ICE-age (Internal Combustion Engine) cars in most driving situations. For my lifestyle, I'll take the EV1 sports car. |
I have driven both the GM EV1 and the Honda EV PLUS,
the EV1 for only a weekend, the Honda EV PLUS for about a month. The cars
are both EV's but they are entirely different from one another. The EV1 is low, stylish, attention grabbing, the driver feels like a space pilot, it has very hot performance, and is a two-seater. The EV PLUS is a bit blocky and upright in style, it feels like a car (a Honda car), it performs well, top speed about the same (80 mph), two doors, four seats in luxury-compact car spacing, and excellent visibility. The batteries of the Honda are metal hydride and have more life (i.e.: more miles) than GM, the motor is DC (I believe) whereas the GM has lead acid batteries and an AC motor. Both have regeneration on downhill runs, both have complete climate control. You use a key with a fancy remote key ring on the Honda, the GM has a digitally actuated lock and ignition. GM uses a contact-less inductive charger while the Honda has a locking metal to metal contact charger (both entirely safe). The charging cables are not compatible. |
